This is a revision of my original translation (below) of episode 190 of the podcast Japanese with Shun. The revision was assisted by an episode transcript.

Japanese with Shun Podcast. Episode 190. Beginners, Genki 1 Level, “Martial Arts”.

Hello everyone! I’m Shun, a Japanese Teacher. Are you well? Okay, good! The 190th episode has come! Hm, really great. I didn’t think I’d be able get this far. As always, thank you so much.

Hm so for today’s topic, I think I want to talk about martial arts. Everyone, have you done martial arts before? Do you like watching martial arts? Well, there are of course people that don’t like fighting.

There are all kinds of martial arts. Such as boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, MMA, for example. Sometimes I watch martial arts. I think it’s fun to watch them. To be honest, during my time in Nelson, I did a little bit of muay thai and Brazilian Jiujitsu. Muay thai looks a little bit like kickboxing. I stayed at a hostel with a lot of friends who like martial arts, so we all went together. It was a lot of fun.

But muay thai hurts, doesn’t it? I’m also afraid of hitting people. Muay thai practice was fun. It was good exercise. But, didn’t want to be in a match. Above the ring where you have the muay thai match, you couldn’t really imagine. Watching a match on TV was also intense. It was really amazing. But honestly, it looked like it really hurt.

My friends also did BJJ. You don’t punch people in BJJ. Because of that, I found BJJ more interesting. Because if you were hurt, you’d get tapped. BJJ also has a lot of different techniques, I think it’s interesting it’s interesting.

Japanese martial arts are popular too. Karate and Judo are popular all over the world. Also, there’s aikido and keno. Honestly, in my elementary school time, I learned kendo. Kendo also is an intense sport. Well, practice was tough, but it was fun. I want to do kendo again some time in the future.

Listening-Only Translation

This translation was done by listening to the podcast episode, without looking at the transcript. I had listened to the episode once before, and allowed myself to pause and rewind where necessary.
