My translation of the easier version of the “Akiko’s American Foreign Exchange” story on Satori Reader.
Today, Scott (from my host family) told me how to get to school. Scott has a 3 year old son named Ryan. Ryan went with us. First, walk about 5 minutes to the bus station near the house. Take the bus from there and go to Fremont. Once there, transfer and go downtown. After that, transfer to a different bus. Then, you’ll have arrived at the school. It all takes about 45 minutes. Starting tomorrow, I need to do it on my own. Will I be able to get to school on time? If I don’t learn English quickly, I’ll be in trouble if I get lost.
Still, it’s the second day since I’ve come to the US. It can’t be helped that I don’t understand English. But, I can only understand about 20% of everyone’s conversations. If a year passes, will I really become able to speak English? If I’m unable to speak English, should I just return to Tokyo!? One year isn’t enough to do it. Not good, not good! I should stop thinking badly. Lights out.
