Ch 7 – My Translation

Obaasan: Frank, let’s go to my kitchen.
Frank: Okay.
Obaasan: Is this Finmububu?
Frank: It’s pronounced Finmuputto, butss that isn’t Finmuputto. What is it?
Obaasan: It’s honey. It’s sticky and it smells good.
Frank: Finmuputto does smell good, and is sticky, but it’s also slimy.
Obaasan: What kind of smell is it? Mint, citrus, or is it sweet?
Frank: Finmuputto is the best smelling thing in space. It so smells good that roses just about lost.
Obaasan: Is that so? Ah, I was slow today too. Let’s search tomorrow.
Frank: Yes, good night.
Frank: Good morning, Obaasan. What’s for breakfast?
Obaasan: ??, can have Natto as a meal. Is that good?
Frank: What is this ‘Natto’?
Obaasan: It’s a little smelly, but it’s really good for you.
Frank: Is that so? I definitely want to try it.
Obaasan: Okay, here you go.
Frank: Ah! This. This is Finmuputto. In space it’s a good smell.

Ch 7 – My Notes

  • Didn’t know ぐらい can be used for comparing things
  • Didn’t pick up on the “it’s late” meaning of 遅い, so translated that line awkwardly.
  • I missed the “また” in “また明日、探しましょう” and translated accordingly
  • Had a huge brain fart and misread 普段 (ふだん) as 値段 (ねだん), which made the sentence (and translation) make no sense
  • Forgot about ごはん also meaning “rice”
  • I translated “とても健康にいい食べ物よ” as “it’s really good for you”, but the official translation was “a very healthy food”. I think my translation is still valid.
  • Learned にいい as a grammar point (“X is good for Y”)
  • Missed 宇宙一 (best in the universe) basically being the same as 世界一 (best in the world)
